What is cupping?
Cupping is a Traditional Chinese Medicine technique that uses gentle suction from cups placed on the skin, usually on the back, neck or shoulders. It is mainly used for muscle tightness and fatigue.
The practitioner checks whether cupping suits you before starting, and may suggest combining it with acupuncture if that would help more.
Who cupping may suit
- Tight, tired muscles in the neck, shoulders, upper back or lower back
- Aches from repeated use, long hours at a desk or exercise
- People who want care for muscle tension that is planned after an assessment
Who should take extra care
Cupping is not right for everyone. Please tell the practitioner first if you:
- Have thin or fragile skin, or bruise or bleed easily
- Take blood thinners
- Are pregnant
- Have a wound, rash or skin infection in the area
- Have a serious or long-term medical condition
About cupping marks
Round red or purple marks after cupping are a common skin and circulation response. They usually fade gradually over several days. The colour of the marks is not a diagnosis on its own — the practitioner looks at it together with your symptoms and assessment.
